Have Your Toenails Become To Long??

5/27/2022

Long toenails can be extremely painful if they are allowed to grow with no regard for basic maintenance and routine toenail trims. The toenails can begin to push up against the roof or front of the shoe and cause bruising, trauma or loosening from the nail bed.

To avoid this from happening your toenails should be well kept by getting basic routine toenail trims every 8-12 weeks. If you experience "thickening" of the nail too, you may need to have your toenails debrided just as often. If you have developed a condition where your toenails begin to overlap; keeping your toenails clipped is even more important. Overlapping toes with extended toenails can puncture the skin of the neighboring toe or below and cause more unwanted issues and possibly infection--all of which can be avoided with a simple toenail trim.

Take care of your feet and your feet will take care of you!

Feet & Aging

4/27/2022

If you are a Pedicurist that primarily services an older demographic, you've probably heard your client mention that their feet don't look the same or feel the same anymore.  Often times the feet are disregarded and not even considered when it comes to aging. More often; people don't focus on their feet unless they begin to experience pain or some type of discomfort. From the time we are born we begin to age.  Aging is the chronological number of years lived and often involves physiologic changes in the body.  If you are fortunate to live into your ripe old years one day you will wake up and discover that you have a new gray hair or one extra wrinkle that wasn't there yesterday. These physical characteristics are what most people notice right away because it's the most obvious in physical appearances. However, the feet are aging and adding more years to each step day-by-day. The feet are the pillars of the body and keep us moving from place-to-place. As we age it is imperative to make sure that you take care of your feet by getting regular podiatry checkups and wearing comfortable fitting shoes at all times.

One noticeable and fairly common characteristic of aging feet is thick and brittle toenails. Keeping the toenails cut and moisturizing the feet can bring much comfort and ease in your life. Circulatory and tendon issues may start to cause foot pain at this stage and this is when it is imperative that you seek the guidance of your Physician or Podiatrist.

Aging is for the privileged and taking care of your feet is just part of the process!

Stay well and take care!

The Complication of Spa Chairs for Seniors at Salons

12/8/2021

Picture
Going to the salon or spa can be very relaxing and for some people; getting monthly services help maintain a quality of life. Seniors, in particular, often visit their local nail salon because they simply can't reach their toes anymore like they used to and now need assistance with routine grooming. However, there often comes a time where some seniors become physically unable to visit their favorite nail shop or spa to get a pedicure or toenail trim because of the cumbersome task of getting in and out of the spa chair.

If you've ever had the opportunity to get your pedicure done in one of those fancy spa chairs with the whirlpool; you probably would agree that the experience can be amazing! But for seniors or people with limited mobility the challenge can be hazardous if care is not taken. So what alternatives do seniors or people with limited physical abilities have? When visiting your local salon, you can ask for assistance getting in and out of the spa chair or you can ask for special accommodations where the Pedicurist or Manicurist could provide your pedicure or toenail trim without using the spa chair.  Ideally, a recliner chair with leg extension is more appropriate for seniors or the mobility challenged. If the salon or spa is not able to provide specified accommodations, you may want to go online or find a referral resource that can provide you with information about mobile based service providers in your area. Mobile providers come to your location and ease the burden of you having to leave your home to get your basic toenail clipping services done.

Pedicure and esthetic foot care services is an industry that is becoming more recognized in the medical community. You may be surprised to find out that Podiatrist in your area may have an onsite medical pedicure spa located inside the confines of their medical offices. Senior community centers are another great alternative to help find foot care resources in your area.
Picture
Recliner type chairs are easier for Seniors and persons' with mobility issues to get in and out easily. Being able to recline the legs back makes it easier for the service provider to perform toenail clippings and footcare services; and is much more comfortable for the client.

Manicure Tip: Keep Polish Longer on Natural Nails

7/23/2021

If you've every had a Natural Nail Manicure done at your local Nail Shop by a licensed professional you may have experienced some premature chipping of your nail polish after just a few days. One way to maintain your manicure and to keep the polish on longer is by using a quality top coat.
Applying a clear top coat to your professional manicure every 2-3 days will help keep the polish from chipping and keep your polish more intact. Applying the top coat works like a double sealant on top of the nail lacquer. OPI has a great product called Drip Dry Drops. This extra step will help to "seal the deal by adding an extra level of protection.

Society has taken a shift in consciousness about how one views his/her health and wellness. The old adage "Health is Wealth" is definitely the mantra for this particular time in our history of events.

Herbal Teas and hot drinks have always been the go to reserve for detoxing the body or helping to holistically manage colds and build up the immunity.  Herbal teas are often made with herbs or roots derived from plants or fruits with alternative healing and medicinal components.  Hot Teas can help sooth an itchy and scratchy throat. Did you know that "thyme" has been known to help relieve respiratory issues and to break up mucus?

Below are just a few simple herbal tea remedies that you can make with very basic herbal ingredients:

Lemon Herb Tea
Take 2-3 cups of water and add to a boiling pan. Bring water to a boil. Take water from the boil and pour hot contents into a 8-12 oz drink mug. Take 1/2 half sliced lemon and squeeze the juice contents into the hot water. Add a few sprigs of thyme herb. Let the tea sit for about 2-minutes. Sip and Enjoy!

Peppermint, Cinnamon and Lemon Tea
Take 2-3 cups of water and add to a boiling pan. Bring water to a boil. Take water from the boil and pour hot contents into a 8-12 oz drink mug. Add your cinnamon sticks or you can use grated cinnamon powder. Also add peppermint leaves and squeeze the juice of 1/2 a lemon or lime into the your hot tea.

Black Seed Oil Tea
Black Seed Oil has many wonderful immunity building benefits. This wonder herb helps to detoxify the body and heal from within.
Take 2-3 cups of water and add to a boiling pan. Bring water to a boil. Take water from the boil and pour hot contents into a 8-12 oz drink mug. Add 1 teaspoon of Black Seed Oil and stir well into hot water. Enjoy!

You can have fun with your herbal tea mix. Use what you already have in your kitchen. The goal is to stay healthy this season and including plant based herbal teas can be beneficial to health and well being.

Take Care and Stay Well!

Note: Always check with your physician prior to using herb based plants and roots if you are currently taking certain medications. Herbs may interfere with particular manufactured medications

How To Remove Your Artificial Nails During the Global Salon Shutdown! Step-by-step Instructions.

4/4/2020

Picture
Nails Salons across the country have temporarily closed and it is causing frustration for locals who are accustomed to getting their nails and pedicures done on a regular basis. Due to the unfortunate events that have taken place. Clients, in particular, are wanting to know how to take off their Acrylic/Gel Full sets and Gel Polish.  If you are currently wearing enhancements like Acrylic, it is probably best if you completely soak off your nails until your salon is up and running again. Artificial nails require routine fills and maintenance and if not kept up you can be subjected to the greenies better known as nail fungus.

Acrylic nails can be simply removed with Acetone. Acrylic Nails and Gel Polish are the only types of services that can be removed with acetone. Hard Gel polish requires more manual removal, like with a coarse grit nail file or by using an electric nail drill if the nails are layered thick.

How should you remove your Acrylic Nails?
1. Fill up a glass bowl with enough acetone to cover the tips of your fingernails
2. Soak your nails in the acetone until the acrylic starts to break up and separate. If your acrylic application is thick, you may have to soak them longer.
3. After the acrylic has dissolved thoroughly, take your 100/180 grit nail file and remove the remaining acrylic. (This is also the time where you can trim your nails back with a fingernail clipper. The nails are often soft and flimsy after taking off Acrylics).
4. After filing with a 100/180 grit nail file, take your buffer block and smooth the nail ridges out of the nail
5. Wash your hands with warm soapy water to cleanse away residue and dust from buffing and filing the nail
6. Dry hands thoroughly and apply a nail strengthener 2-3 x per week to regain the health of the nail.
7. Apply daily cuticle oil to help keep the nail plate moisturized and the cuticles soft.

Safety 101

We are living in era that can be quite unfamiliar to most and with many unexpected challenges that can affect the way that business is done in the service, wellness and health industry.

With the evolving recent events, Nail Techs and Pedicurist are now aware that the business involves much more than putting on a set of nails and perfecting the steps to a pedicure. This industry must take advanced safety precautions to ensure that standard universal precautions are being taken to ensure that the health of the customer and the servicing provider are in the highest regard. PPE (person protective equipment)  should be a priority for all Nail Techs and Pedicurist or anyone in the beauty servicing industry. Wearing gloves, using facial mask and disposable isolation gowns is the very basic preventative measure that should be taken. These basic items can be purchased online or you may be able to find them locally in your city at a DME (durable medical equipment) store in your area. Online retailers are excellent choice if you live in a rural area or prefer convenience.

Getting a Manicure or Pedicure is still a wonderful treat and necessity for many and with these helpful tips...all is well!

Are you getting enough sleep?

3/5/2020

The joys of sleep...awwww!  As service providers are we getting enough sleep? With so many things to do, places to be and people to see--sleep deprivation can become commonplace for many these days.  Service providers, in particular, need to make sure they are getting enough rest on a daily.  Sleeping just makes sense! There is nothing honorable about not getting rest for the body and mind. In order to service others you must first serve yourself.  In this era, it is easy to get caught up in the "Team No Sleep" anthem, but honestly this is not realistic and does more harm than good.

Resting helps keep the mind sharp, your creative juices flowing and helps to keep the bags from forming under your eyes. Taking a break and making sure to take a vacation away from it all is truly necessary. A vacation does not have to be something extravagant, It can simply be taking time off from your everyday responsibilities and doing what you like to do!Ever heard of a staycation? Become a tourist in your city or state. There are probably many places you have not visited in your home state and taking some down time to explore is just the adventure you may need! You have my permission to sleep in...you deserve it :)

Are you getting enough rest?
